“Per cent” means “per hundred.” So 30% isn't some scary symbol — it's just 30 squares shaded in a grid of 100. Once you see that grid, discounts, test scores, and statistics all click into place.

The word hides its own meaning. Per means “for each,” and cent means “hundred” — it's the same cent hiding in century (100 years) and centipede (a bug with loads of legs). So per cent is just a fancy way of saying “for every hundred,” and the little % sign is shorthand for “out of 100.”
That's the whole trick. Picture a square chopped into a 10-by-10 grid — 100 tiny squares in total. A percentage tells you how many of those squares to shade. Shade 30 of them and you've shaded 30%. Shade all 100 and you've shaded 100% — the whole thing. Once the grid is in your head, a percentage stops being a number you memorise and becomes a picture you can see.
Why does the world love 100 so much? Because 100 is friendly. It's big enough to be precise — you can tell 47% apart from 48% — but small enough to picture. Comparing “19 out of 25” to “31 out of 40” is a headache; turning them both into a score out of 100 makes the comparison instant. Let's build that grid and play with it.

Every square is worth exactly 1%, because 100 squares share the whole evenly. That's the quiet superpower of percentages: the size of one little step is always the same, no matter what you're measuring. One square in, one percent up.
Play for a minute and the grid teaches you something words can't. 50% fills exactly five rows — a clean half. 25% fills two and a half rows — a quarter of the grid. And a single shaded square is 1%, the smallest friendly slice. You're not memorising these; you're seeing them.
You don't need to memorise all hundred. A few benchmark percentages act like landmarks — once you know these, you can find almost anything else by mixing and halving. Each one is just a famous fraction wearing a percent sign.
Fifty out of a hundred. Half the grid, half the price, half the marks. Find it by splitting the whole in two.
Twenty-five out of a hundred. It's half of a half — split the whole in two, then in two again.
Ten out of a hundred — one whole row of the grid. The easiest one of all: just move the decimal point one place.
A single square. Tiny on its own, but it's the building block — every other percentage is just a pile of these.
See how they nest? 10% is one row, 25% is two-and-a-half rows, 50% is five rows, and 1% is one square. Knowing 10% and 1% especially is like carrying a master key — because from those two you can build any percentage you'll ever need, which is exactly what we'll do next.
Shading a grid is one thing. But the real question in shops and exams sounds like: “What is 30% of £40?” Here's the calm, no-panic way to find any percent of any amount — and you only need two friendly steps you already met.
To find 10% of an amount, just divide it by 10. So 10% of £40 is £4. Now scale up to the percentage you actually want. Need 30%? That's three lots of 10%, so 3 × £4 = £12. Need 40%? Four lots: 4 × £4 = £16. Want 5%? That's half of 10%, so half of £4 = £2. This “find 10% first” move handles a surprising amount of everyday maths in your head.
When the percentage isn't a tidy multiple of ten, drop down to 1%. To find 1% of an amount, divide it by 100. So 1% of £40 is £0.40. Then multiply by however many percent you want: 30% is thirty of those, 30 × £0.40 = £12. The beauty of the 1% method is that it always works — 7%, 23%, 99%, anything — because 1% is the single square the whole grid is built from.
Find 10% by dividing by 10. Find 1% by dividing by 100. From those two, you can build every other percentage.
Both methods land on the same answer, because they're the same idea seen from two distances. Method 1 builds with big bricks (rows of ten squares); Method 2 builds with single bricks (one square at a time). Notice the two methods always agree — they have to, because they're the same calculation taken in different-sized steps. Once 10% and 1% are easy, every percentage in the shop window is within reach.
If 100% is the whole grid, what could 150% possibly mean? It feels impossible — until you remember that a percentage just compares one amount to another, and the second amount can be smaller.
100% means “all of it” — one complete grid. To show 150%, you simply reach for a second grid and shade half of it too: one full grid plus another fifty squares. So 150% is one-and-a-half times the original. If a £40 game is now selling at 150% of its old price, it costs 1.5 × £40 = £60. If your savings grew to 200% of what you started with, you've doubled your money.
You'll meet this most often when something grows. A population, a price, a video's view count — anything that can become bigger than its starting size can pass 100%. The grid still works perfectly; you just need more than one of it. And going the other way, percentages can be tiny too: 0.5% is half of a single square. Percentages stretch as far as you need, in both directions.

Score 18 out of 20 and that's 90% — a way to compare marks even when the tests are different sizes.
“30% off” means you knock 30 out of every 100 pence off the price. Bigger percent, bigger saving.

Spot the thread? In every case, a percentage takes some messy real number and re-tells it as a score out of 100, so it can be compared with anything else. That's why the world reaches for percentages so often — they make different-sized things speak the same language.
This is the slip that catches almost everyone, so let's meet it head-on. A percentage means nothing until you know what it's a percentage of.
Fifty per cent sounds big, but it's only half of whatever you're talking about. 50% of 8 sweets is just 4 sweets. 50% of £2 is £1. The percentage tells you the share, not the size — and a half of something small is still small. Always ask: half of what?
Watch this. 50% of 8 is 4. But 10% of 90 is 9. So the smaller percentage wins easily — because it's a small slice of a much bigger whole. You can never compare two percentages until you know what each one is taken from. The whole is half the story.
So whenever a headline shouts a percentage at you, train yourself to fire back one question: per cent of what? A percentage is a brilliant way to share out a number — but it's only half a sentence until you know the whole it belongs to.
