Two kinds of worlds circle one star.

The four inner planets are small and rocky โ€” worlds you could stand on. The four outer planets are enormous balls of gas and ice, each with its own personality.

Picture the Sun in the middle. The nearest four โ€” Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars โ€” are like marbles: solid, small, close together. Then a huge gap, and four giants โ€” Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune โ€” spread far apart like beach balls in a much bigger room. Same family, completely different sizes and temperatures. Let's go meet them.

First, the map

Eight planets, in order from the Sun.

Everything in the solar system orbits โ€” orbits means travels around in a loop โ€” the Sun, a giant glowing ball of hot gas. Starting closest and moving outward, the eight planets go: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. A classic way to remember the order: My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos.

Here's the big split you'll see again and again:

A rocky (terrestrial) planet is a small world with a hard, solid surface made of rock and metal โ€” the kind of ground you could actually walk on. A gas giant (Jupiter, Saturn) is a huge world made mostly of gases like hydrogen and helium, with no solid surface to land on. An ice giant (Uranus, Neptune) is a giant made largely of icy materials โ€” think slushy water, ammonia, and methane deep inside โ€” wrapped in thick gas. The inner four are rocky; the outer four are giants.

How big is the gap? Jupiter is the largest planet โ€” so wide that all the other planets could fit inside it with room to spare. Earth next to Jupiter looks like a pea next to a beach ball. That's the second demo below: pick any two worlds and see them drawn to real relative scale.

The numbers here are rounded and approximate, but the point is unmistakable: rocky worlds are marbles, giants are beach balls.

A surprising twist

Which planet is the hottest?

Easy guess: Mercury, since it's closest to the Sun. And it's true that Mercury's daytime surface is scorching โ€” hot enough to melt some metals. But here's the twist that trips up almost everyone:

Venus is actually the hottest planet overall, even though it sits farther from the Sun than Mercury. Why? Venus is wrapped in a thick, heavy blanket of clouds and gas. Sunlight sneaks in and warms the surface, but the heat can't escape back out โ€” it gets trapped, like the inside of a closed car on a sunny day. This heat-trapping is called the greenhouse effect. Venus's blanket is so thick that its whole surface stays baking hot, day and night, while Mercury โ€” with almost no air to hold heat โ€” turns freezing cold on its night side.

And the coldest? Head to the far end. Neptune is the farthest planet and the coldest, a deep-blue world where sunlight is faint and temperatures plunge far below anything on Earth. So the pattern isn't a simple straight line from hot to cold โ€” an atmosphere can matter as much as distance.

Who wears rings?

Saturn's rings โ€” and a secret the giants share.

When you picture a planet with rings, you picture Saturn, and for good reason: its rings are bright, wide, and stunning โ€” made of countless chunks of ice and rock circling the planet like a flat, glittering hula-hoop. They're the most famous sight in the solar system.

But here's the part many people miss: all four giant planets have rings. Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune have them too โ€” they're just thin, dark, and faint, so you need special telescopes and spacecraft to spot them. Saturn simply got the dazzling set. Meanwhile, none of the four rocky planets have rings at all. So rings are a giant thing โ€” one more way the two teams of planets differ.
